Social Progress Party
Politics to serve all of society, not just the wealthy and powerful.
Constitutional Reform
Reshaping the political environment to rebuild trust and maximise democratic impact:
Proportional Representation; reform and modernisation of the Houses of Parliament and the monarchy; protected policy areas; restore EU alignment; increased devolution.

Underlying Principles:
Reflecting the democratically expressed majority views of the population should be the purpose of any elected Government, although this must be tempered by protections for minority views that are genuinely held and whose protection would cause no limitation or harm for others.
Progressive societies develop over time, and so there must be an allowance for flexibility and change within any constitutional structure, but not to the extent that the populace can have no reliance on current policies and laws.
Where possible the representation of the people’s views should be given valid weighting and consideration in line with the depth and breadth in which they are held across the population.
There will be occasions where such consideration is not possible – for example, issues of national security, fast developing novel situations, complex and detailed international negotiations, matters with a lack of informative data on public views – and as such, the Government must be trusted to act in line with its stated principles and beliefs. As a result, these principles and beliefs must be clear and consistent for each party throughout the electoral process and in Government.
Those individuals representing the people and allocating the spend of public money on their behalf must act with selfless and transparent motives, with no special treatment for donors, media, family, friends or other such interested parties.
Wherever possible, transparency must be utilised to allow an understanding of how policy was formed, amended and implemented, and how public money is spent.
Parliamentary discussion of issues and policy should be informed and thorough, but not at the cost of interminable debate and toothless or ineffective legislation.
Public information should be available free from material bias and manipulation; there should be a reliable, independent, publicly funded source for verification of facts relating to both events and data.
Central control of national policy and issues (e.g. legal, justice, national taxation) should not preclude or overly restrict regional flexibility to act within those frameworks.
International relationships are more important than ever in a globalised, hyper-connected world. The issues of increased migration, climate change, international trade, multinational corporations, the internet and social media, societal change, and business and tourist travel demand that we honour our international agreements and commitments, and are fully engaged in international organisations and communities in order to have some influence in shaping global responses.
The monarchy should still have a place in the UK constitution, however the historical favour and substantial financial support that the family has been afforded is no longer appropriate. The modernisation and rationalisation of recent decades must be accelerated.
